Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee was gheraoed by some people claiming to be Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters at Pandua in Hooghly district when she was on her way to a rural hospital. Chatterjee’s car was allegedly attacked in the incident, after which police came and controlled the situation. Responding to the incident, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar accused the police of inaction and slammed the law and order in the state. Dhankar wrote on Twitter: “The state of collapsing law and order can be assessed from the scenario that MP Locket Chatterjee was subjected to such treatment with hooligans coming too close to MP’s vehicle with aggressive posturing and on occasions also smacked the car with hand. Police inaction.”

Chatterjee wished to visit the hospital following allegations that a doctor had been manhandled by a few miscreants in the area. She left after facing protests from some people, who claimed to be TMC supporters. Chatterjee, who was defeated in the recent assembly election, told reporters: “The incident happened in front of the police. It is clear from this how the law and order situation is in the state.”

BJP leader and Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh also took to Twitter to express his outrage at the incident. Singh tweeted: “If an MP is unsafe in her own constituency, then how will she be able to work for the public. TMC goons gheraoed MP Locket Chatterjee’s car and misbehaved with her. If an MP can be treated like this, then what will happen to the general public?”

The declaration of results in the recent Assembly elections has been followed by political violence in the state. The BJP has claimed that over 30 party workers have been killed in the violence backed by the ruling TMC government.

Locket Chatterjee, on Thursday, claimed that Bengali Hindus were under attack in Chandannagar, Hooghly. She claimed the “riots” in Chandannagar was a result of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “appeasement politics”.
