Digvijay’s untimely clubhouse conversation takes Congress by surprise

This is even though Digvijay Singh did not say anything different from the Congress Working Committee resolution of 2019. But in the time of pandemic when BJP wants to get back to hard political issues, the effort of Congress has been to remain focussed on pandemic related narrative.

Congress Rajya MP, Digvijay Singh stirred the hornet’s nest when he said that Congress Party must have a relook at this issue which involves restoring statehood to the Jammu and Kashmir and Article 370.

Digvijay Singh was having an impromptu conversation with people on Kashmir in a clubhouse conversation. This conversation has raised a mini political outrage storm within political circles. The position of Congress leaders has remained ambiguous on the revocation of article 370 and the creation of two union territories of Kashmir. Many Congress leaders in 2019 had supported the revocation of article 370 even then.

BJP asked the Congress Party to explain its stand on the issue. It was quick to initiate a narrative on the national vis anti-national line. BJP to this effect also held a press conference and party spokesperson Sambit Patra said that Congress is holding views that are shared by Pakistan.

The former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh is known for landing Congress in unnecessary controversies. On the other hand, Digvijay Singh received support from the Gupkar Alliance.

Pawan Khera, Congress Spokesperson said that CWC had passed a resolution on 6th September 2019 and senior leaders must stick it. The resolution had criticised the dismemberment of the state undemocratically and the dissolution of article 370 by the BJP government. The resolution clearly stated its opposition to the revocation of article 370 and the creation of Union Territories in an arbitrary manner by the Central government.

Sources say that Congress is not too keen to address this issue lest it gets entangled in the debate of nationalism versus anti-nationalism. It is for this reason, not much was said on the clubhouse controversy during the press conference. This is even though Digvijay Singh did not say anything different from the Congress Working Committee resolution of 2019.

But in the time of pandemic when BJP wants to get back to hard political issues, the effort of Congress has been to remain focussed on pandemic related narrative. This narrative has been able to create pushback for the BJP which for the last 7 years has been on the offensive majority of the time. It is for this reason, senior leaders continue to maintain studious silence on this issue.
