For all those Gossip Girl fans out there, this is going to be very exciting news: a new generation of New York’s young elite is on the way, and HBO has just published the first official teaser for the legendary show’s remake, which will premiere on July 8. It is being called ‘ Gossip Girl Reboot’. So, are you ready for some gossip?
Set to Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids” soundtrack, the teaser introduces us to today’s Manhattan private school influencers: a group of friends who have known each other since they were children. “We have history…we have trust. We are the owners of this school.” This is what the flashy glimpses of how the upper class really lives look like.
But elitism brings drama, and when a high-rolling friend group decides to welcome a newbie (Whitney Peak’s Zoya Lott) into their prestigious circle, things quickly spiral out of hand. When you add in the threat of “Gossip Girl” (in the guise of an Instagram account), it’s obvious that the teenagers will be coping with a lot more than only social problems.
Developed by original Gossip Girl writer and executive producer Joshua Safran, the new series “takes us back to the Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark,” according to HBO’s official synopsis. “Gossip Girl explores just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.” Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who created the original series that ran for six seasons on The CW, also serve as executive producers on the reboot.
The series also stars Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, and Savannah Lee Smith, in addition to Peak and Alexandar, who appears to be the Blair Waldorf of 2021.
From 2007 until 2012, the original successful teen drama helped establish the careers of performers such as Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, and Chace Crawford. Kristen Bell plays herself in the series and don’t we love her. In the new series, Bell will reprise her role as the original voice of New York’s elite social scene.
There is so much drama to unfold, just a perfect distraction during the pandemic and we’re just getting started.
