Patna/Biharsharif: Bihar minister Sanjay Kumar Jha said that a video circulating online of an old woman and her granddaughter living in a toilet in the state’s Nalanda district was fake. Jha said that on inspection it was found that the two people were living in a hut next to the said toilet. Earlier, the video, which went viral on social media and was carried by multiple news websites, showed a woman, identified as Kaushalya Devi, living inside a public toilet with her 10-year-old granddaughter in Nalanda due to poverty. Nalanda is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s home district. Kaushalya Devi and her granddaughter are residents of Diripar village under Makarota Panchayat.
“A video has gone viral on social media to spread rumours that an elderly woman is living in a toilet with her granddaughter. During an inspection conducted by the Nalanda district magistrate, it was found that the woman, Kaushalya Devi, lives in a hut next to the toilet,” Jha wrote on Twitter. The district administration will get the woman’s hut renovated and get the road adjacent to it paved, Jha said. He added that Kaushalya Devi lives alone with her granddaughter and has no issues with access to food as she gets senior citizens pension and government-subsidised food grains.
Nalanda District Magistrate Yogendra Singh said Kaushalya Devi had four sons, two of whom died. “The young girl living with her is the daughter of one of the two sons. One of her sons lives in Delhi and another at Hilsa in Nalanda district. But they do not have any contact with their mother,” the DM said.
Singh said that following the circulation of the video online, an inspection was conducted. The news about her staying in the toilet was found to be untrue as she was found sleeping with her granddaughter in a hut adjacent to the toilet. The District Magistrate added that the Block Development Officer of Karaiparsurai has been directed to renovate the ceiling, the walls and the floors of the woman’s hut.
